What?!

Where's the picture that was in my mind?

Wonder what will come out of my brush tomorrow.

Inner Landscape

I knew I'd only have about 25-30 minutes to paint yesterday.  When I woke in the morning before birds were even chirping I decided in my half sleep that I would paint without an external reference. I'd paint an inner landscape, so to speak.  I wanted to be loose as I painted and do no more than put some color on paper, maybe mostly greens with a narrow band of blue at the top.  How hard could that be?

Yeah, well.

But, I blazed a trail and just did it.  And I like the landscape.

In Bloom

Painting small.  Painting quickly.  Painting daily.  Starting and stopping something new every day. Posting what I paint.

Gasping for air.

But, hey, I have five new paintings in my studio that weren't there five days ago.  And not too many bruises from all the ways I get in my own way.

Spring Morning

One spring morning many many moons ago, when Meg, Scott, Jay, and I visited the Wenham Library every week, Pat Purdy had a lush arrangement of lilacs at the circulation desk in what I realized was a perfect vase for lilacs.  I think of her every May when I mass magnificent lilacs of my own into my ceramic yard-sale knock-off vase.

Bench Press

Heavy lifting:  Paint for an hour, stop.  See what happens.

Heaviest weight:  Let it be as it is.

Boxed In

My plan:  paint a few shapes, play with colors, play with edges, be loose.

My experience:  hesitation, indecision, fear, contraction.

On The Loose

A year ago I put paintbrush to canvas for the first time.  Since then I've painted for at least a few minutes most days.  Knock me over with a feather!

On the first anniversary of this creative adventure, I've decided to enter new territory again, this time to create a blog and do a painting a day.

In my studio today—not for the first time—I set the intention to paint loosely.  Painting loosely does not come easily or naturally to me.  At all.  But, look!  Not so tight!
